ActivePDF DC Host service Does Not Start and Logs are Not Generated

Starting the DC Host service results in a timeout. No ActivePDF log files are created or written to during the attempt.

Probable Cause:

  • Missing root certificates:
    When the server lacks access to the Internet, it cannot retrieve required root certificates. If the certificates are not available, the service fails before DocConverter can perform any function, including creating a log file.


  • Unable to update the root certificates:
    Even if the root certificates are available, if the server lacks access to the Internet, it cannot perform the the required update check on the certificates.


Connect the server to the Internet for the before starting the service.

If this is not possible or it still fails, make sure the required certificate:

Thawte Premium Server CA.

is on the server under the local computers Trusted Root Certification Authority.

If the required certificate is available, you will need to enable a Group Policy that prevents Windows from trying to update the certificate on use.

To prevent Windows from performing an update check

  1. Open gpedit.msc:

    Computer config > Administrative Templates > System > Internet Communication Management > Internet Communication settings

  2. Enable Turn off Automatic Root Certificates Update.
