Word File Quick Facts:

  • Released on October 25, 1983, Microsoft Word (or simply Word) is a format used in most word-processing software, including Microsoft Office.
  • A Word file can contain formatted text, images, tables, graphs, charts, page formatting, and print settings.
  • Microsoft Word's native file formats are denoted either by a .doc or .docx filename extension.
  • Opening a Word Document file in a version of Word other than the one with which it was created can cause incorrect display of the document.
  • The latest version (as of this writing) is Word 16, released with Microsoft Office 2019.

Why Convert Word to PDF?

With each version of Microsoft Word, the standards for the DOC format change slightly, which can cause some compatibility issues. This is why it is recommended to convert Word files to PDF, especially before archiving.

As we know, one of the biggest advantages to using PDF files is that there are regular updates to the file type, which can improve security, handling of different formats, and more. This is great because it means you won’t have to deal with the potential of compromised files due to an un-updated format.

Another important reason for converting PDF to Word in an archiving situation, is that a PDF is compatible with virtually any platform. Just about anyone can open a PDF whether it is on Windows, Mac, an iPhone or Android; and without the need of running Microsoft software.
