Description
By default, PDFs created by activePDF Server do not include the Base-14 fonts or embed the entire font, which is known as Subsetting. Many printers also perform Font Substitution, which can change the font included in the PDF. In some cases, it may be beneficial to change these defaults.
NOTE: The following instructions are written for Server SP7. You can upgrade to Server SP7 at http://www.activepdf.com/downloads/servicepacks/index.cfm. Embedding Base-14, all fonts, or disabling font substitution may increase file size.
Details
Embed Base-14 Fonts
Per the PDF Specification, the Base-14 are not included in output PDFs for reduced file size as the should be available on every system. Due to the wide-range of PDF viewers and machines available, the Base-14 fonts are not the same in all cases.
Click to select Embed Base 14 fonts and then click OK.
Click Start > Run, type services.msc /s, and then click OK.
Right-click the activePDF Server service, point to Properties
Right-click the Print Spooler service, and then click Restart.
NOTE: Restarting the Print Spooler service will restart all system printing processes.
Embed not Subset
Subsetting fonts reduces the files size of the output PDF by only including the font characters used in the PDF. The unused font characters cannot be added to the PDF unless the font is re-embedded through an alternative process. Embedding the entire font allows you to utilize font characters not presentely displayed in the PDF, and may improve the look of the output PDF on machines without the font installed.
Click to select Disable font subsetting and then click OK.
Click Start > Run, type services.msc /s, and then click OK.
Right-click the activePDF Server service, point to Properties
Right-click the Print Spooler service, and then click Restart.
NOTE: Restarting the Print Spooler service will restart all system printing processes.
Disable Font Substitution
Font subsitution occurs when the PostScript® printer in use does not or cannot include the listed font. This is common with many fonts where there are several builds of the same font and the printer includes a version different than the one found in the input document. This may require altering the Defualt Printer to Emulate printer properties.
