The Individuals with Disabilities Education
Act (IDEA 97) is an U.S. law that guarantees all children with disabilities
access to free and appropriate public education. This Act strengthens
academic expectations and accountability for the nation’s 5.8 million
children with disabilities and bridges the gap that has too often existed
between what children with disabilities learn as opposed to what is actually
required in regular curriculum. IDEA 97 has been successful in ensuring
that children with disabilities and the families of such children gain
access to a free public education and in improving educational results
for children with disabilities in an inclusive, non-discriminatory manner. |
